First Pap Test

When should I have my first Pap test?

The current recommendation is for a woman to have her first Pap test at the age of 21 and then every 3 years. This is sometimes confusing for patients because an Annual Physical Exam (Wellness Visit) is still recommended. At the Annual Physical a decision can be made whether or not to perform a complete pelvic exam to obtain a Pap test or other testing as indicated. It was previously recommended for women to begin Pap testing during their teen years if they were sexually active. That is no longer the case. A Pap test is not required for a woman to start birth control.
